Air Researcher Badge - Research and Model
Description
Complete parts 1 and 3 of the Air Researcher Badge on a scout night.
We ran this after a visit to the excellent Avro Heritage Museum, but any aircraft museum would suffice.
Resources
Stanley/Craft knives with new/sharp blades.
Cutting boards (kitchen ones are fine).
Risk Assessment for safe supervised use of knives.
Cereal/tissue boxes or similar cardboard, asking scouts to bring them in can be useful.
Research materials, we use textbooks and magazines, but the internet works well if you don't have sufficient printed materials.
Pencils/pens.
Some sort of sweets/chocolate for an edible prize.
Instructions
Scouts split into pairs and each pair is given a worksheet.
Pairs choose an aircraft from the available research materials, and each pair fills in their worksheet on their chosen aircraft.
Pairs also produce a slot-together model by drawing their aircraft on cardboard and cutting it out with knives. I have tested with both knives and scissors, and have found knives to be safer if handled correctly, especially when cutting the slots for the wings and tailplane to go through the fuselage. The attached model took me about 20 minutes, so one scout should be able to produce something of at least similar quality in an hour or so.
Leaders award prizes (sweets or chocolate) for the best model, best research etc. as motivation to try and do a good job.
Depending on your computer, you might need to install this font to make the worksheet readable: https://opendyslexic.org/
