What is a disability?

A disability is a condition that limits a person’s movements, senses, or activities, which affects their ability to perform everyday tasks for at least a year.

What are everyday tasks? - ask the Beavers

Dressing / undressing
Going to the toilet
Eating
Walking
Seeing
Hearing

Examples: - (ask the Beavers first)

Loss of an arm or leg
Paralysis - not able to move/feel part of your body
Speech impediments (stutter/stammer etc)
Deafness
Sight impaired/blind
Dyslexia - problems reading, spelling and writing - letters back to front and jumbled up
Dyspraxia - coordination difficulties and find it hard to explain what you want
Autism or ADHD - differences in how the brain is wired.
Autism - there are a range of differences such as not being able to hear what someone is telling you in a loud room as all the other noises are filling your head; wearing headphones can help. How things feel may be important so your clothes need to feel right and labels may feel extra scratchy. You may have certain things that are really special to you and want to do or talk about them a lot.
ADHD - your brain is often busy thinking about lots of different things at once and moving about can help you to concentrate.
Both autism and ADHD can make learning harder in school but with the right support you can do really well.
Loss of other senses (Taste, Smell)
